My students need the single burner, colander, cutting boards, dish cloths, straws, can opener, dish drying rack and knives to be able to prepare meals. They will be able to prepare simple meals for their classmates.
I teach special education students in a resource classroom setting. My class is small with approximately 6 students with various disabilities. My students come from a very low socio-economic area. They also come from a very rural area. The students are excited to come to school and show what they know! They are very eager to learn, and this life skills project would help them to learn and grow.
They enjoy hands-on activities and this will be just what they need.
They love to cook and prepare food.
My Project
By having materials like a single burner, colander, cutting boards, and dish cloths in my classroom, my students will be able to learn to prepare meals for themselves and their families. This will allow them to be independent and it will prepare them for the transition into middle and high school so that they can prepare their own meals for themselves. The students will also be able to use the hot plate to prepare meals.
By cooking various food items the students will be able to function on their own in the kitchen.
Students will decide on menus for the week and get to prepare them for the class.
