Help me give my students a love for learning by creating a community with welcoming character education books and the binding materials to make our OWN class stories about our experiences and reactions to the world around us!
While I work at a low-income, Title I school, you will not find students more eager and excited to learn! They LOVE each other, LOVE coming to school each day, and DESERVE to come into an inviting and welcoming classroom environment that they help to create! My 5 and 6 year olds are what give me JOY and inspire me to PERSEVERE and do my best each day. I am HUGE on character education, and this is the most important lesson I can teach all year long. My students are bright, energetic, playful, and full of imagination!
My Project
As kindergarten students, many of my sweet babies come in with no prior school experience. They need stories, discussions, and to connect with their own emotions in order to learn to process the modern classroom and society as a whole.
By using amazing books throughout the year for character education - these stories ease children's fears about unknown situations and give them coping mechanisms and examples about how to react in given situations.
I lead off lessons with these witty stories that conquer many situations and issues our smallest students face today in softer language made for young learners, and help to begin to shape their futures.
After reading stories/discussing these issues, we LOVE to make "class stories" to remember our connections and feelings. As a part of our curriculum in "K", we complete an entry assessment each year to gauge their readiness for school. Many of these assessments are NOT academic, but social and emotional. Making class stories and having books by amazing authors will encourage my students to not only make connections and internalize these strategies and feelings, but talk/draw/write about them as well, strengthening their social and emotional well-being.
The binding material requested would make creating "class books" so much easier. 3 ring binders do not hold up an plastic sheet protectors are expensive, but binding the pages together would enable me to much more quickly get the "class book" into student hands. In the reading center, the class books foster literacy and shared reading opportunities, as the students like to share what their part in the story is and "read" it/discuss it with others. It also fosters positive emotional and social relationships as they learn to help others. Please help me bring social and emotional wellness to my students through this project!
