Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students make us smile every minute of the day - whether it is because they just said their first successful sentence in English or have shared their feelings in our daily social-emotional circle. We work with a diverse group of very special children. Each one is unique in his/her own way. Our classroom is combined 6th-8th grade students who travel through a continuous war zone to come to school every day eager to learn. They are a diverse population, who face many challenges such as special needs, social-emotional trauma, along with being the first in their family to have a formal education; yet they are survivors who refuse to let these obstacles get in their way.
My Project
Flexible seating gives kids a chance to choose where they are most comfortable learning. Whether it be on a wobble cushion for their individual chair, or having a portable lap desk, giving students the option gives them the opportunity to be in their best learning environment. Knowing that they have the option to change their seats during the day will help my kids who have trouble sitting still, struggle to focus, and need frequent change of pace. Flexible seating has immediate benefits including burning calories, increasing motivation and engagement, using up excess energy, creating better oxygen flow to the brain and improving core strength and posture. Physical activity has also been linked to higher academic performance and improved behavior. I feel that having these options will make the overall classroom experience for my diverse learners a comfortable and welcoming experience each every day.
