I am a special sducation teacher. I teach students with moderate to severe disabilities. I have the best class in the whole world. The majority of my students are boys who have autism. They are the hardest workers! My students share the excitement and joy of truly wanting to learn and do well on school. Each student has individual goals which are worked on throughout the year. These goals coincide with core academics and academic standards. In addition, we have a class walk program where the students earn a prize monthly for the number of laps walked.
My students deserve the very best!
They are the hardest workers and strive to do their very best ALL the time. They are extremely compassionate and caring for their fellow classmates. They are creative - finding new and exciting ways to overcome their disabilities. My staff and I support our students within the general education classroom as well as in the special day classroom.
My students, their parents/guardians are a true family! We celebrate all the accomplishments no matter how big! I love my students and would give them the world if I could.
My Project
I teach special education in a small school in Allied Gardens, a little community in San Diego. I currently have thirteen students, twelve boys and one girl. The majority of them have a diagnosis of autism. Our school recently opened a STEM lab. My students have had the opportunity to go there occasionally and do some of the simple tasks.
I am responsible for teaching all core academics to my students and create appropriate and engaging lessons to meet their individual needs.
My students would love to participate more in the STEM learning going on at my school. The hands-on approach is so important when working with students like mine. It would be nice to be able to access and provide more STEM based activity kits for my students. They love to build things like castles, houses and ramps for cars. In addition, they enjoy hands-on experiments and being able to create different things.
With the diverse learning which takes place in my class, having additional STEM materials which they could access would be so beneficial for them. We need tools like this to spark their creativity and to help them demonstrate knowledge in the classroom.
