My students need 3 more iPad minis (with shockproof cases) to integrate technology with reading, mathematics, grammar, science/ social studies, and classroom management.
"I believe we will achieve!" resonates from our room each morning. Twenty smiling faces stare at me with the wonder of a new day and new opportunities. Twenty first graders prove that they are responsible, respectful, and ready to achieve each day because everyday is a good day to learn something new!
My classroom is an ESL (English as a second language) classroom.
My twenty-one kiddos are so excited to be in school each and every day. Many different ethnicities and languages are represented in my culturally diverse classroom. We celebrate our languages, traditions. and uniqueness everyday. Most of my children's families are extremely loving and try to do everything they can possibly do for their children. They support the classroom as much as they can, although language can sometimes be a barrier. My school is Title 1. We are a neighborhood school. Generations of families come to our school for the dedicated staff. One hundred percent of the students receive free and reduced prices breakfast/ lunch. This technology can help close the achievement gap and improve learning for students that would typically not have access to a tablet or computer at home. My school is not your typical school where parents donate to the classroom. Nor do we have a PTA to help raise money for things like this.
My students will use these 3 iPad minis daily (in addition to the three we already have) in a variety of ways to integrate all subjects. Use of the iPads will be very structured. Procedures and safety thoroughly taught and repeatedly practiced. Students will learn how to use these independently, collaboratively with peers, and also in small reading and math groups to boost achievement. My class will be taught respect and responsibility for the learning opportunities this technology will provide us. I will use these tablets in conjunction with my personal iPad. Here are some of the programs I plan to use: Wixie, Epic App, ScootPad, Touch and Write Phonics, Sight Words, ABC Phonics, Meet the Vowels, StoryKit, TimeReading, Arithmaroo, Tens Frame Snap, Mad Math Together, these applications coupled with my direct teaching will change my classroom. Engagement will increased, time on task will sky rocket, and it's almost like each student gets a little personal tutor when I am not available.
This technology donation will improve reading fluency and comprehension, understanding of math concepts, provide grammar practice, and opportunities in science and social studies.
Many of my students do not have access to technology at home. For some students this will be their first exposure to a tablet and the many learning apps that are available. This technology will provide them with the hands on, experimental, and interactive opportunities that they need to reach higher levels of thinking.
