The K-5 students that I work with in my reading intervention classroom are those that are failing reading as well as other academic areas. The school that I teach in was impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Many of our students' families were displaced and have faced challenging struggles to get back to normalcy.
Not being able to read proficiently impacts the self-esteem and ability to achieve success.
Fortunately, these identified students are able to come to my class to work on closing the gaps in their reading skills and begin to achieve their academic goals.
My Project
The "We Both Read" books are an innovative resource I would love to utilize to encourage meaningful parent involvement with my reading intervention students. "We Both Read" books are unique in that they are designed for parents to help their children learn to read while having fun together. Parents read the left-hand pages, and children read the right-handed pages, which have text written at one of six early reading levels. These books were developed by reading education specialists.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know- The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go." -Dr. Suess
For this project, I have purposely chosen the "We Both Read" titles that are science related in order to support knowledge of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in the world around us, while also improving my struggling students' reading fluency and comprehension.
Each week, students will choose and check out a leveled "We Both Read" book of their interest to take home and read with their parent. Each book has suggestions for comprehension conversation. Students will have a brief sharing time at the end of each week to share any new knowledge they learned while reading their "We Both Read" book. I hope to have the opportunity of implementing this project of bringing parents and children together to accelerate student reading development and overall student success!
