Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten students are so excited to learn and especially more eager to apply their learning through hands-on activities. A large percentage of my classroom students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Since kindergarten is sometimes most of my students' first experience in school, I want to make sure that we set a solid foundation with lots of rich and meaningful education.

Students in my class are of diverse backgrounds and speak different languages at home. Their English language levels range from beginning to advanced. Based on our school's statistics, over 85% of our student population come from a lower socioeconomic status. Unfortunately, socioeconomic status can affect the quality of life as well as the opportunities and privileges given to them. So, at school, we try our best to provide our students with necessary materials but the range of needs are very wide. With that said, equipping students with necessary materials can help give students that rich learning experience and the gap the discrepancy.

My Project

My kindergarteners this year start school at varied and mixed reading levels and abilities. The levels range from students who are beginning to learn letters all the way to students who can actually read already. So, I wanted to make sure to build my guided reading book collection to meet the needs of all the students in my kindergarten classroom. My young students love to read and are so excited to apply everything they learned into their reading. They are ready to tackle reading books and we need awesome books that are both engaging and at their levels. With these leveled reading books, it would really support my kindergarteners during our guided reading block. Our guided reading time is a very valuable time because I'm able to pull small groups of students at a time to give that more catered and differentiated instruction to further develop their skills in phonics, context clues, and comprehension.

All children, regardless of their reading levels, should have access to engaging books.

Whether they are learning at home or in school, I want to nourish that curiosity, that excitement, and that hunger to read. By starting their reading journey immediately and having amazing leveled guided reading books, we can support our students!
