Do you remember the first time you were swept away by a thick chapter book, reading it cover-to-cover? With your help, we can bring that sense of wonder and achievement to our special education students through Brian Selznick's mesmerizing novel in words and pictures, "Wonderstruck."
I am a high school librarian collaborating with an innovative and caring special education teacher to bring the love and wonder of reading to her class of curious students through the library and in the classroom.
These students love to watch, listen to and share stories but many of them struggle with reading. These struggling and "reluctant" readers, are intimidated by chapter books. Sadly, some of them don't have any books at home.
My Project
With your help, we will give our students a unique and empowering reading experience. More than novel or picture book, "Wonderstruck," moves the story forward through short segments of prose and vivid illustrations that draw the reader into action. Our struggling and reluctant readers will be engaged with reading in a new way.
With your help, we will put this rich and compelling 608-page novel into the hands of each student. Imagine first the surprise and then the sense of pride our special education students will experience when they realize they can read and enjoy such a thick book! Through this story of two young people struggling with disabilities, our students will make connections to their own lives and explore related topics across the curriculum: literature, history, science, art and travel.
The right book at the right time can be a life-changing experience.
With your help, we can change the lives of our students, giving them the confidence and incentive to read independently as they explore the richly imagined world of "Wonderstruck."
