My Students
Our school is a Title I school. Most of our students come from a low socioeconomic background. However, they are extremely special and unique in more ways than one. They have an extreme love for learning and will stop at nothing to achieve success. My students face daily challenges that include poverty, housing conflicts, unstable households, violence, and crime. The majority of my students have witnessed a murder or heard that a family member or close friend was killed. All of my students receive free or reduced-rate lunch and, sometimes, this is the only hot meal they will eat. This is their reality. Many times they will come to schools on an empty stomach. Providing breakfast, lunch, and a snack during the day are some of the things we do to help our students. We know that many of them will go home to either nothing on the table or a plate that may not be enough to satisfy their hunger. Again, this is their reality. We realize that our students are walking miracles.
My Project
This year, our students will be studying Pam Munoz Ryan as an author. These books will make a great difference in my students' learning experience because they will encourage my students to discuss in detail the required literary elements of characterization, setting, events, themes, and writing techniques.
My students will also use these books to help them create their own personal narratives in their writing unit.
In our school, students are encouraged to study authors with diverse backgrounds and learn more about their writing styles. I try to promote greater amounts of reading, increased reading frequency, and more diverse reading experiences among all my students. These books will help students compare and contrast ideas, literary elements, and narrative techniques across texts.
Finally, these books will help my students point out narrative techniques and their impact on readers. As a result, my students are more inclined to acquire greater levels of reading and writing achievement.
Thank you in advance for all your support towards making our fifth grade experience a beneficial and memorable one.
