This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We work primarily on language arts in my classroom, but we find applications from other subjects to boost our reading skills. We have read about and practiced composting and vermicomposting (composting with worms). Next, we will apply hands-on learning to supplement our nonfiction reading.
My students are diverse learners in 4th through 6th grades.
My students absolutely love nonfiction. My students have difficulty accessing general education curriculum and really need hands-on learning to supplement their skills. Small projects from early in the year have created strong memories and built community in my classroom.
Our school is in a neighborhood that faces many challenges in Chicago. For some students, just getting to school is a challenge. Once they are here, they are eager to learn and show what they know.
My Project
The planters and soil will be supplemented by a previous project and use compost we have been collecting this year. We will plant the herbs and flowers and use our southern exposure windows to get our plants going strong for the spring. During and after planting we will be reading about plant cycles, types of plants, and growing conditions.
During growth we will take pH measurements, and use the "Etekcity® 2 Pack Indoor/Outdoor Moisture Sensor Meter, Soil Water Monitor, Hydrometer for Gardening, Farming" to collect data. Students (and I) will learn gardening skills that can be transferred to small plots outside the school and home. We will use the Fiskars 30 Inch TerraBox Planter, Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Garden Soil, and other soil products to grow the herbs and flowers year round.
Your support will beautify our room, our school, and our community.
The activities that will be possible with these supplies will enhance nonfiction reading, including life science. This project will also provide a connection to a skill that is often overlooked in schools: growing and caring for plants!
