Welcome to our special preschool classroom. We have differing ways of communicating, manipulating and navigating within our classroom, but the one thing we have in common is that we are all learners. Every student can learn!
Many of my students may not have access to experiences that we would consider "typical" during their early learning years.
Our school is in a district where more than 75% of students come from low income households. In addition, my students also have a variety of differing abilities that impact their ability to engage with their surroundings. Some of my students are non-verbal, some have speech-delays, physical impairments and other differing abilities. We have a peer model system in our room, so that half of our students are typically developing and can be models for the other students. They become partners in learning from each other, helping each other, so that we all succeed. It is extremely rewarding to spend my days with such a diverse group of young learners.
We are curious about our environment, we ask questions, we explore with our eyes, our hands, and and we can all learn and succeed in our own way.
My Project
These seats will help my friends with varying needs to have a defined space to sit and improve their abilities to interact positively during group activities. We want all of our students to have the resources they needs to make positive choices, and thus develop their positive self image. We will hang the mirror in the class so that students can see themselves interacting with others and reinforce positive interactions.
We are a diverse group of learners, but we believe every child can make positive choices and be a successful learner!
The blocks and emotion mirrors will be used in conjunction with our social emotional curriculum to support student understanding of emotions and how they affect themselves and others.
