My building is unique in that it brings all the fifth and sixth graders together in the district. They come together from 4 different elementary schools. Nearly 50% of the students in my school receive free or reduced-cost lunch. They come from a variety of households with some living in single-parent homes or with grandparents.
They all contribute to our classroom with their unique personalities and strengths.
My goal is to provide my students with a wide variety of high interest books.
My Project
On the first day of school, I tell my sixth graders we will be reading a lot! I challenge them to each read 30 books during our time together. They look at me like I am crazy, but I know they will find books they love and will begin their journey as readers.
Now, I see them opening their books on their laps to sneak a couple of minutes, reading as they walk down the hallway, and hear them suggesting books to others.
The books I have selected are by some of my students' favorite authors including April Henry, James Patterson, and Chris Grabenstein. Others are high interest books that will be loved by many of my readers. Having a library full of great titles allows me to create an environment where reading is celebrated.
