In the words of Stuart Duncan, "Autism is not a disability, it is a different ability." Every child learns differently and it is my job as their teacher to discover what works best for every child.
Success will look different for each and every one of them, but every achievement is a reason for celebration.
All of my students have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Every student has his/her own unique strengths and needs. My students have a wide range of abilities, with each of them working on personalized goals. Some of my students struggle more with communication, while others struggle with appropriate social behavior and interactions. All of my students need a high level of adult supervision and assistance throughout the day.
My Project
My students do free writing multiple times per week where they choose a topic and can write whatever they want about their topic. Once a week, we present our writing to our peers and practice giving feedback. My students need an echo microphone to aid them when presenting - including knowing when it is their turn to speak.
As with all authors, my students need a place to showcase their writing.
The bookshelf will provide an area in the classroom where their writing journals - accompanied by their author's picture and biography - can be showcased every day for all to see who visit our classroom. This will be a special display that will play an important role in our author's corner.
Some of my students are not writing letters yet, but are at the scribbling stage of writing. To better express themselves, they need access to stamps and stickers of letters to place on their paper and to read aloud when it is time to share. The scissors aid the students who are still building their fine motor skills to cut out the picture they want to write about. These tools will help all my students be successful writers and proud authors!
