Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very bright, but oftentimes struggle with literacy and abstract concepts. We come from a high poverty district with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
My students have needs that fall within the severe/profound needs area in special education and need access to lots of visual items to help reach deeper levels of knowledge.
Our students are able to reach greater depths when they are able to touch models and move them around. It also helps to hold their interest and increase their motivation, as oftentimes their attention spans are very limited.
In our classroom we are looking to provide an environment full of learning opportunities that stimulate their academic, language and social growth. We are working on helping them become seamlessly integrated into our school programs and working toward their independence.
My Project
This project will give my students the ability to have hands on materials that look like the students I teach. We want to have lots of access to materials of all different ethnicities to show appreciation and celebrate our classroom cultural differences. We have been using a broken globe for awhile now and several of my students will be able to benefit from the pictures on these materials as they are still working to improve their literacy. The pictures help them to identify places with the names. This is especially important for my students that have autism.
