Help me give my students the opportunities to have hands-on learning and to build basic number sense skills and fluency in order to become successful in mathematics.
We have around 400 students. Many who are open enrolled (around 13%) who choose to come to our school because of its wonderful reputation. 46% of the student population is economically disadvantaged, almost 23% of the population are students with disabilities and about 8% of students have limited English proficiency. However, our students are amazing, wonderful and inspiring people, and they show huge growth in subject areas.
Their hard work and determination have helped our school to earn an amazing 5 star rating on the state report card two years in a row.
I know that each student would benefit from any hands on learning experience. Those experiences will help them make connections to their own lives and, in turn, each will retain new skills.
My Project
This math kit will be an additional resource for my students in order to lay a good foundation of number sense and fluency in math facts. Employers today, and I can only imagine in the future, require intense math skills, so it is essential to lay the foundation in mathematics.
Keeping students excited and engaged in math is the key to connecting them to what they are learning.
When students make a connection to material introduced and use hands-on activities to learn, they retain the information more easily and connect to it.
Children will benefit from this approach in math and any other area of development for first grade. Math skills are ever-advancing in jobs , so why not give first graders the critical materials to learn more in order to get jobs that are not even created yet.
