Help me give my students access to high quality texts that support both the understanding of science along with our language arts skills.
As a teacher in a small, rural district, I recognize the many challenges my students face in their daily lives. I also know how important it is to offer them the opportunity to explore a range of issues and for them to think deeply. I hope to provide classroom experiences that help to push their thinking and abilities to new places. This includes deeper thinking about social issues, how to think about and read science, and how to thrive in a global world.
My students are amazing in so many ways, and I am privileged to be able to teach them.
Each day I go home, I think about what I have learned from them, hoping that I was able to teach them something. Like most students, they love positive attention and to learn. Many of our students come from lower socioeconomic situations. However, I don't want this to prevent them from achieving their life goals. I focus on doing things that help to transcend this barrier and keep them focused on their bright futures, even if they don't always see what I see!
Scholastic's ScienceWorld magazine will enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. Teaching both science and ELA gives me the unique opportunity to use these magazines to support both disciplines. We will use ScienceWorld to support the skills we learn in our ELA classroom - close-reading, organizing our learning, understanding and answering text-dependent questions - while we learn science.
With these magazines students will make real-world science connections and see how science relates to our everyday lives -from the sports we play to the foods we eat.
Each magazine includes a variety of topics, sure to interest students and Scholastic provides resources to support all levels of readers.
In addition, students will work on their non-fiction reading skills, while reinforcing important science concepts. With these magazines, students will learn new terminology without the drudgery of memorizing vocabulary. They will also engage with text features like diagrams, maps, and infographics, helping them become better at understanding information from a wide variety of sources. These magazines will help to enrich their school experience in both science and ELA class.
