Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 28 awesome first graders that welcome me daily. We start the day at 7:35 am ready to go. The children help each other write the morning message in their journals and complete their reading folder activities. By now, they are experts when it comes to classroom routines. I am really proud of the progress they have made this year. Many of the children face diverse hardships and lack the resources to thrive.
The class consists of Special, General, and English Language Learners.
As the day continues, we gather on a small carpet with whole group instruction and transition into a variety of teacher-prepared centers. During this time, I instruct guided reading while the other students are completing individual assignments.
The children are very motivated to learn and are always excited when I introduce a new skill. They were so thrilled when our last class project was funded and they truly appreciated it. I was impressed at the way they were so focused on writing thank you notes and drawing pictures.
My Project
Supporting STEM in my classroom will increase hands-on learning. Most of my math block instruction is in the afternoon. I really need to encourage the children to stay focused and on task. We have group meeting time on the carpet where I will model a task and then the children will disperse into stations. The stations will consist of creating durable age related math materials by printing and laminating word problems or math facts.
First graders will enjoy using tools such as the whiteboards and flash cards to help them count quickly and identify numbers.
My goal is for them to become independent learners and problem solvers. Your donation will make a difference.
