Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school, which means that a majority of our families are at or below the poverty line. About 80% of the student population is Dine (Navajo) or Hispanic. That percentage is a little higher for my classroom. And I truly love each and every one of my kids! Each of them adds something unique to our classroom! Despite any challenges they may face outside of the classroom they are always happy and excited to come to school!
Besides reading, writing, and arithmetic I want to teach my students to be good citizens!
I want them to take pride not only in their accomplishments academically but also in their role as classroom citizens. Several students are chosen at the beginning of each week and are assigned "chores." This helps not only me but our custodians as well. Now I would like to give my students some more responsibilities.
My Project
The materials and supplies I am requesting for my classroom will help my students to become better citizens. Our classroom is already very neat and organized. (It is also very fun and inviting!) All of our textbooks, workbooks, notebooks, pencils, and other materials have a place. But now I would like to transfer more of the responsibilities of taking care of our other things onto my students. Laminating or putting learning materials such as task cards, graphic organizers, and charts into sheet protectors will allow my students to use these things more independently. In addition, I will worry less about things needing to be replaced as this will also prolong the life of these materials so we can continue to use and enjoy them throughout the year.
I believe it is important for my students to learn to be more independent.
Some of them desire very much to be trusted. Giving them opportunities to earn trust within our classroom will hopefully transfer to situations in the real world.
There are also some basic things I am requesting such as chart paper, markers, and pencil sharpeners. We also work hard on keeping our classroom clean and sanitized so we can all stay safe and healthy.
