My students attend a low SES school in a rural area of West Virginia. A declining and aging population means fewer funds for pubic education.
My students are high achieving 11th and 12th graders studying Pre-Calculus, College Algebra, and AP Calculus.
They are excited about mathematics and science, and they plan to attend college to pursue careers in STEM fields. Having access to the latest technology allows them to compete on a level field with students from more affluent areas.
My Project
This project is for Go!Motion sensors. They are handheld devices that connect directly to computers and graphing calculators. The Go Motion sensors will allow my students to collect position, velocity, and acceleration data of moving objects, and this will help them connect the concepts we are learning in Calculus to real-life.
We know that active engagement with mathematics helps students to understand and be able to use their mathematical knowledge outside of their math class.
Recent studies show that about one-fourth of college freshmen fail to earn a C or higher in their first college calculus class. I want to give my students the best chance at beating those odds in their pursuit of a career in a STEM field. These Go!Motion sensors will be a valuable resource in our active learning classroom.
