My classroom is a place of discovery. Scholars in my classroom commit themselves to creating an educational environment that embraces challenges and diversity. They tackle difficult hands-on projects and support one another as they solve problems while learning about the history of our world and our nation.
Serving grades 6-8, our school provides a rigorous curriculum and sets high expectations for all students and staff.
Our goal is to prepare our students for continued educational success in high school, college, and beyond.
My Project
As my students continue to learn about US History and Current Events, we are working on building a more positive classroom culture so that all students feel that their voices are heard and their stories matter. When students of color learn history from textbooks or just one perspective, they can feel ostracized and marginalized. Taking time to strengthen relationships between students in my classes empowers them to work together and face problems together.
These resources will empower my students to learn about history from multiple perspectives and encourage them to build relationships with peers who might not share their same background.
I want my students to understand the responsibility that we have as human beings to inform ourselves of historical and current events that continue to shape our world so that they can be positive agents of change in their families and communities.
We will use the books to supplement our course textbooks so that multiple perspectives of history are shared. Visual learners will benefit particularly from the visual history books in this project. We will use the games during team-building time blocks to promote positive peer relationships. I intentionally selected both History/Civics-themed games and general board games so my students will have opportunities to work together in ways that doesn't always involve our course content.
As we use these important resources, I am hopeful that students will grow in not only their knowledge of History and Current Events but also in their understanding of how important it is to set differences aside and work together toward a common goal.
