Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a diverse group of fantastic students. However, the majority of my students come from the public housing system in NYC, along with an increasing number of English Language Learners.
"The greatest natural resource is the minds of our children."- Walt Disney
They are a wonderful group of students who love to explore and learn as well as amaze me on a daily basis. Even though many of them face very harsh realities, they still come in excited to learn and happy to be in school. My students find comfort in the school; for some, it is one of the few constants in life they can count on. Working in a large urban city school with very limited resources, I have learned to be creative when it comes to providing my students with resources.
My Project
My classroom consists of extraordinary learners and despite their struggles wish include Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy needs, ADHD, and Learning Disabilities they are always trying their best. I am in need of incorporating math and literacy centers which will help struggling learners practice various skills. Some children still struggle to recognize letter sounds, some are working towards putting sounds together to read words while others are reading sight words. In math, we are work towards gaining an understanding of number sense and decomposing numbers. By creating fun and engaging centers all of these skills will soon be mastered but we are in need of some basic items to make this happen. We need laminating sheets to laminate our centers for long lasting fun, fly squatters for swatting flies with sight words and letters and sheet protectors to preserve recording sheets for easy reusable center recording sheets.
Despite struggles my students face they remain positive and enthusiastic learners who are excited to come in to school and learn each and everyday.
Help me make fun hands-on learning centers to engage struggling learners.
Students with ADHD will greatly benefit from these hands-on learning materials because they sometimes are not as easily engaged with traditional paper and pencil tasks. These materials will help drive their instruction as well as keep them engaged.
