My students are in Pre-k, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades and are part of a self-contained behavior intervention program where we work on improving their behavior to get back into the mainstream classroom. We are a transient program so students come and go throughout the school year. We are close to a military base so many of my students come from military homes and a large majority of them receive free or reduced lunches.
My students are smart, funny, and loving kids who are full of potential but struggle with basic classroom behavior.
Like any classroom, we have our good days and our bad days, but every day we are making progress!
My Project
Social-emotional learning is such a huge part of early childhood education. It is where students learn critical social skills like showing empathy, sharing, making and keeping friends and how to balance their everyday emotions. The Covid-19 pandemic has made this a difficult fete, with mental health issues at an all-time high, covid-19 protocols in the classroom, and even virtual learning to name a few. The current situation has made the need for quality social-emotional learning opportunities even more important than ever before.
I would like to help bridge this gap in my classroom by providing daily social-emotional learning lessons for my students.
My students are all working on learning the skills they need to be successful in the general education classroom. Using the materials, like the Behind the Door little red door social-emotional activity kit, will help us introduce and teach social skills in a way that is developmentally appropriate and fun! Activities like the social-emotional match-ups and peel and stick moody monsters will help us reinforce skills already taught! All of the materials I have selected allow students the opportunity to explore emotional regulation in a hands-on way, which is the way that young children learn best!
