My Students
Our school has been classified as a Level 5 turnaround school due to its historic underperformance and attendance. Many students come from impoverished economic backgrounds, with 85% of student qualifying for free or reduced rate lunch, 57% of students who have a first language other than English and a large population of the student body being identified as high needs due to trauma experienced in their lives. Needless to say, simply coming to school can be a challenge for many students.
Despite these challenges, my students are some of the most amazing and strong people I have encountered in my life.
My students bring a liveliness, energy, and character that is unmatched by any other community I have been a part of. Through some of these struggles, they have created a culture of inspiration that has touched the lives of many educators and community members.
My Project
In my time as a teacher, one of the greatest lessons I've learned is the importance of culture and community building and that starts with the classroom! One way I plan to confront some of the challenges my students faced when coming to school is by creating a warm and welcoming classroom.
I want my classroom to be a comfortable environment where my students feel safe to take risks in their learning.
To do this I want to furnish my classroom in a way that makes it feel homier with a cozy rug for classroom meetings and open circles, comfy floor seats, and bean bag chairs.
My goal is to have more flexible seating for students during independent and group work time. By giving my students more ownership of their learning I hope to create more engagement across all subjects and by doing so, this makes students more comfortable in their learning environment.
Through these efforts and donations, I'm hoping to create a classroom that students can be proud of and excited to go to every day. Building relationships with my students and having them feel safe and cared for is my first priority come September and throughout the year and I believe the classroom is where it starts!
