Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Were you ever told in art class that you couldn't make a special project that you wanted to because your teacher didn't have the supplies needed? I fear that happening to my students this year. My classroom is lacking the basic supplies like black sharpie markers.
I have the most amazing students.
They come from homes with little to no income, I see some 750+ creative minds in and out of the art room in one week. With all these students, I am fortunate to see some amazing talent. Unfortunately, with budget cuts our opportunities to purchase supplies has become a problem. These students come from very poor families, and having art is an opportunity for them to show off their talents, and boy these students are talented! Having come from all over the world, their talents and cultural background shine in their creativity.
My Project
This past school year I introduced students to the art of Zentangles. Zentangles is an art of relaxing your mind and drawing small black and white patterns. Its actually defined as a doodle, yet looks like so much more when you get down to it. I urge you to look it up if you have the chance. I didn't realize how popular these were when I first saw the activity that I found online. My students were so amazed, involved and enjoyed every second of this activity and I hope for next school year to create a whole unit with many different activities all around the art of zentangles. It was an amazing sight to see even the most hard to reach student relax and enjoying the zentangle self portraits we created.
I like to think of the art room as a sanctuary for my students, a place to free their minds from the outside surroundings of their everyday loves.
Having these supplies and being able to create these Zentangles will give my very talented students an opportunity to express themselves and grow as individuals.
