I teach in a life skills based classroom with students ranging from 14 to 21 who have significant needs. The students in our classroom work hard every day to learn daily living skills, increase their independence, complete academic classes at their level, learn how to behave appropriately at school, home and work, and improve their social skills. We are blessed to have a sensory room and a kitchen attached to our classroom that gets used every day. The staff have all worked hard to help learn how to best feed the sensory need of the students in our room and find a variety of tasks that help teach vocational skills in addition to all the other academic skills being worked on.
My Project
I have spent a lot of my summer researching and looking at different ways to set up my classroom in order to help support the learning of all of my students. I want to find ways to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and to continue to build positive relationships with our general education peers.
The table and stools are one of the ways to incorporate additional flexible seating in our room.
The cushions will help to keep us comfortable while we learn.
We also run a coffee cart business and have always used whatever cart we could find. Last year, the one we were using fell apart! We would like to get a new one that is sturdy and will last us a long time.
