My students need a listening center and 22 Time For Kids subscriptions to help my class of multi-leveled readers access and achieve exposure to a variety of books and media.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Ideally every student would arrive in the classroom reading on grade level. However, this is not the case, and as a teacher it is essential that I am able to allow kids who have large gains to make in reading to read and also to listen to text in order to fully engage in it.
We are a class of 20 students in the District of Columbia at a Title I school.
We have a diverse population of student needs and the majority of my kids come from low-income families. They are eager learners and thrive when given opportunities to try new skills in meaningful ways. They love challenges in learning that allow them to touch, discuss, write, and fully engage in what we're learning.
My Project
The listening center I have requested will allow all levels of readers to access enriching texts I build into language arts, science, and social studies. Time For Kids is an engaging monthly magazine that I have requested to grab students' interest in reading, expose them to non-fiction, and help them be aware of current events. Reading is a skill that is required across the curriculum, so students who are poor readers struggle in all subjects.
A listening center will be critical to allow struggling readers to participate, build their comprehension, and fluency skills.
Most importantly it will allow them to feel success in the classroom. The magazine subscription is a valuable resource that helps my students understand that reading is not limited to stories, but should be used to gain knowledge of the world around them. Help my students be engaged and prepared to learn.
