I teach young children with multiple disabilities. They are a wonderful group who love to learn. It is a joy to provide them with unique and meaningful learning experiences. Most of our students have physical challenges as well as medical issues and cognitive impairment. Although their challenges are many, their enthusiasm and positive spirit empower us to develop their skills and increase their level of independence at school, home and in the community. We are proud of their accomplishments and want to find creative ways to showcase their abilities.
I would love to help the children make their own books. We provide lots of opportunities to learn for our special children and then take photographs of them in order to demonstrate their achievement. Our children cannot participate in standardized assessment and we need to find alternative ways to measure what they are learning. Once we have an assortment of photographs, the children can help pick out the pictures that they would like to include in their own books. For example, we could have a child make a book of her bowling experiences at Chelsea Piers. Another child might make a book that contains pictures of him learning to walk. I feel that the children, parents, staff and administrators would all love this project. We would have a publishing party as a concluding event and invite family and friends to come visit the classroom. The students would take turns showing off their books as well as showcase their ability to learn. I think that this is a wonderful project for our students that will produce a terrific product as well as demonstrate their capability to learn. Please consider funding this proposal. We will make sure to send you great photos of our special childen in action as a way for you to share our gratitude and joy.
