My students need magnetic letters and numbers to use as "adaptive pencils". Many have poor writing skills, but enjoy learning to write and do math with magnetic tools.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine wanting to "write" like the other kids, but your fingers just would not cooperate. Now imagine using fun, colorful, magnetic letters and numbers - allowing you to write ALL BY YOURSELF! Imagine the feeling of accomplishment! Please bring a smile to my students' sweet faces.
My students are all special-needs first and second graders.
Over half have some form of autism, and most are cognitively challenged. Nevertheless, these students can learn! One of my second graders can already read over 250 sight words! We are in a school with over 85% poverty-level students, so asking the parents for resources is not an option. These kiddos get so excited when I bring in any new learning tool - it's like Christmas morning!
My Project
Many of my students are capable of learning to write or add and subtract, but their hands will not allow them to reproduce the work on paper. This leads to frustration and eventually shut-down. The magnetic letters and numbers can be used as an "adaptive pencil" enabling the students to "write" all by themselves. With resources like the magnets and magnet boards, these students' confidence in their abilities will soar - encouraging them to try more new things and to hold their heads high.
My students have been dealt a double blow.
They are both "differently-abled" and growing up in poverty. The only hope they have to lead a productive life is to learn to read, write, and have basic math skills. If they give up now, when they are so young, what hope do they have? These early successes breed confidence and a love of learning that can carry on through their adult years, helping my students to become productive and happy members of society.
