If science can be presented in an exciting way, children LOVE science. With so many resources available, why should cost prohibit my students from learning in a fun and exciting way? Constantly, I tell my students to dream BIG, work hard, and great things WILL happen. I believe that in my heart.
My students are wonderful.
They touch my heart each and every day. It is a cliche to say "I love my class", but I truly do. Curious, considerate and motivated are a few words that describe my class. There are 22 third graders in my class. We are an inclusion class with special needs students in the classroom all day.
My school is a Title 1 school. That means about 95% are on free or reduced lunch. That does not mean we are any different than anyone else. It simply means we are not as privileged as some other schools.
My Project
In my class, I love to see my students engaged in their learning. I try to provide hands on activities for my students to give them concrete examples.
The resources I am requesting will allow us to learn about magnets and electricity through experimentation. I cannot imagine how difficult it is for my students to understand these concepts through a textbook only. But, that is what we have.
Our magnetism and electricity unit will come to life when the children can construct a compass, build an electromagnet and discover what metals are magnetic. They will be fully engaged when they create everything from an electric loop and a real-working motor to a telegraph that sends Morse Code! As they build a battery, an electrical car, a solar-powered racer they will be true scientists.
The books and activities will target standards in these areas: understanding current and static electricity, simple circuits and how electricity produces magnetic effects.
My students do not have the opportunities that some other children have, but they should have every opportunity to learn.
