Ms. Skinner from Winters CA is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

We Are All Writers (and Illustrators!)

My students need high-quality mentor texts for use during Writing Workshop and basic writing/book-making supplies, such as scissors, markers and staplers, to create and publish their own writing projects.

My Students

"Can I make another book, just like a real author?" It's a question I hear many times throughout our daily Writing Workshop. Our small school has a decent library, but often lacks the high-quality mentor texts that inspire young writers. My students also need basic writing/book-making supplies.

My first graders attend a small school in a rural California town.

Over 70% of our students are low-income and over 60% are English Language Learners. There are about 400 students at our school and the teachers here are working hard to make a difference. The students are motivated and want to learn. Since writing is such an important skill, I feel a strong sense of urgency when teaching my students to read, not only as readers, but as writers.

My Project

It is hard to create anything without some sort of inspiration. By reading aloud and analyzing mentor texts, carefully selected to model genre, text structure, punctuation use, and craft), I ask the children, "Could you do this in your writing today?" This list of books will take the students' writing to a new level. They will be able to tell and write a personal narrative that create suspense (like Donald Crews in Shortcut) or structure texts in interesting ways (like Cynthia Rylant in The Relatives Came). Finally, using the new scissors, markers, staplers, and tape, they will be able to make their own "books." Making "writing stuff" (Katie Wood Ray's term) is developmentally appropriate and leads to bigger projects. It also encourages kids to think about writing whenever they read! It is a powerful experience, when asking a room full of six-year-olds, "Can you make a book like this?" to hear a resounding "YES! Can we just get started on our writing now?"

The written word touches every aspect of our lives, and in guiding these young learners, I hope to nourish in them a love of language that will stay with them for life.

By providing models of excellent writing, and by providing a structure in which to discuss author's craft, my students will learn that they can be successful writers. Sharing writing builds community, too, as students encourage each other, share in each other's successes, and celebrate the fact that we are, indeed, all writers.
