My students are a very special group of children. Together, with my wonderful paraprofessionals, we are the Life Skills classroom on our elementary campus. Our children are from a variety of backgrounds. Many parts of our neighborhoods struggle, especially now. All of my students have survived Hurricane Harvey. Some of their families fared well, while others lost everything.
I passionately believe that all students have purpose and all have the ability to learn, including mine.
They can make a difference.
My Project
For the Month of April, our elementary campus has united wholeheartedly to celebrate and promote Autism Awareness Month. Faculty bought special t-shirts and students had great fun with mismatch day, cap day, wearing blue, etc. Our book order such as: "A Friend Like Simon," "Why Does Izzy Cover Her Ears?," "Different Like Me," will continue awareness and understanding.
My heart "runneth over" experiencing the overflow of participation, smiles, and love shared with our ASD students.
The goal of this project is not only for providing resources for my own students on the spectrum; but our goal is to also enable all teachers to have access to these wonderful books to promote awareness in their classrooms throughout the school year.
