Help me give my students their own music kit. While we have shared instruments in the past, in our current situation, my students need a set of rhythm instruments of their own.
I teach in a culturally and economically depressed area and most of my students have never been exposed to different styles and types of music. I have the rare pleasure of being able to open the world of music to these students. They are so eager to learn and willing to try just about anything I throw at them. We’ve experimented with everything from xylophones to ukuleles. My students are learning to read music and play various instruments.
One of my fondest memories was when a student thanked me for teaching her something she never thought she could do.
Another was able to talk her father into buying her a ukulele after our unit on string instruments.
Teaching music full time is so fulfilling. My room is all set up. I actually have a dedicated space for my students to experiment with everything from percussion instruments to their voices, guitars, pianos, and accordions.
My Project
While we have shared egg shakers, tambourines and rhythm sticks in the past , in our current environment, my students need a set of their own instruments. I've collected DIY rhythm sticks, cups, and egg shakers.
The kazoos and scarves will round out our DIY music kit.
The music room looks a little different this year and my students are hard at work studying rhythm and beat.
With their own music kit, my students will be able to explore different movement and rhythm styles. As well as develop their aural capabilities with the different sounds the rhythm instrument make.
