My Students
I teach at a middle school in a large city. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and supper. My students are amazing and eager learners, and I want to help them become successful, happy adults.
Most of my students are from the local area.
They have chosen to follow a marine science and environmental studies pathway for their middle school years. English is a second language for many of them. Their parents encourage them to learn as much as they can while supporting the teachers any way they can.
My Project
Students in my classes are voracious readers. They will borrow a novel from my class library, read it, and come into my class at lunch to talk about the book. I want to get a few more copies of We Are All Made of Molecules by Susin Nielsen to use as an anti-bullying conversation starter. This book will help my students recognize individual differences between people and learn to accept others. The characters in We Are All Made of Molecules include a brainy nerd, a social girl, a homosexual parent, and a widower.
The situations presented in the novel will provide my students with an additional opportunity to discuss the topics of bullying, tolerance, and acceptance.
They may see themselves or others in the characters which can only improve their empathy towards people that are different than themselves.
