My Students
Spanish, Afrikaans, Arabic, Fulani, Swahili, Chinese, English, Creole, and American Sign Language are just a few of the languages our students exposed to on a daily basis--both in the home and at school. My students, whom are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, are in a self-contained total communication program located in the Bronx, NY. We simultaneously use various forms of communication in our room to fit the needs of each learner. My students are very hard working compassionate kids with a love of learning and experiencing new things first hand. They are all incredibly intelligent and intuitive, but lack of language exposure and often times lack of resources contribute to their lack of understanding and access to grade appropriate instruction. For this very reason, literacy instruction is key to their success and eventual language acquisition.
It is my goal to facilitate their learning through hands on student centered experiences, all-while challenging preconditioned notions of society, their home communities and themselves.
The expectation is that they will become critical thinkers that will formulate their own opinions about the world and change it for the better.
My Project
The selected books will inspire students by allowing them to connect to characters that they share life experiences with and gain empathy for those they do not. All books selected are will be added to our classroom library, with each book being featured every few weeks in classroom lessons/discussions.
These books are centrally themed around diversity, inclusion and the understanding of others lives.
Every family is different, every student is different, and so are our experiences. These books will allow us to examine our own lives by seeing ourselves in the story (which we so seldomly do) and develop empathy for others by noting both our differences and similarities and appreciating them for their uniqueness.
