My students are energetic and excited to learn, but not necessarily excited to read. And, for the most part, I understand why. Many of the whole class texts we read are dated, to say the least.
I believe every student deserves to see themselves in the classroom, and the texts that I have available don't accomplish this.
I work with a diverse group of students, racially and socioeconomically. It is my responsibility to make this happen for all my students.
These materials are just the start in my quest to build a classroom culture where all students have the opportunity to see themselves in the books they read. I want to ensure what we read reflects the students in my classes.
If students see themselves in the literature that they read, they start to realize they are not alone.
In high school, many students feel isolated, and literature is one way to help students form connections and learn about themselves.
I am continually reading and researching to find new titles to ensure that I am able to accomplish this goal.
