Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand.” – Chinese proverb.
I teach enthusiastic, funny, and energetic 4-5 year old learners in a collaborative (general education and special education) Expanded Transitional Kindergarten in a large, urban, 100% Title I, Los Angeles school.
My students spend their day actively learning through play, literature, music, movement, and hands-on experiences. Our classroom provides students with opportunities to develop their social skills and the foundation for academic learning. We have a diverse range of abilities and work together to foster an inclusive community.
My Project
I believe the arts play an important role in the lives of children. Visual and performing arts and music fosters and inspire my students' creativity and imagination daily in my class.
We have a variety of musical instruments and art supplies, many funded through Donorschoose, but our classroom lacks cupboards for storage, and our materials are scattered around the room.
By using mobile storage carts, I can create organized centers where art and music materials could be stored and made accessible to students.
Every year, I have students create self-portraits at the beginning and end of the year. I want students to create unique pieces that represent how they see themselves as the year progresses. By funding this project, students would have the materials to be able create their portraits on real canvases and paint like an artist using table top easels.
Art and music are areas in which ALL students can experience success and feel good about themselves, while tapping into their creativity.
