Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I give 100% to my class, and I am trying to provide a warm and engaging environment for my students. Kindergarten is often the first school experience that my students have. Many of my students have never held a tablet or used a computer before. We currently are using one kindle that we rotate.
My students are bright, alert, and enthusiastic!
They come from some of the poorest families in California. 100% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch and 99% are English Language Learners. Many of them live in cramped spaces and do not have enrichment opportunities at home. Please help level the playing field for them. Many come to school hungry, and we provide snacks. Many come from families that are not literate, and we provide books. Many come to school unsure of themselves, and we instill confidence. Many families lead lives of struggle, and we provide structure and routine. Now, our students are being asked to work at a common level with students that already have technology at home and in their classroom. You could help us provide the brightest most deserving kids with the same opportunities.
My Project
We rotate in small groups during reading every morning. We would use the iPad minis during one of our rotations so that each child had the opportunity to use them on core language arts skills every morning. In the afternoon, during our hands on math time, we would rotate our small groups again and work on Common Core math skills.
We would use the white boards daily during whole group time and word work. I have been using the backs of binders for this activity for years, but they are hard for some of our kids to handle and these hard whiteboards look durable and much more accessible for kids to use on the rug.
This project will give my kindergarteners experiences that they otherwise will not have.
