My students need a set of boomwhackers to have fun learning about the different pitches in the music scale. They are a BLAST and reinforce a variety of musical skills!
My students are so eager to make music. ANY kind of music, and with any and ALL instrumentation. We start our day with rhythm-reading and continue making music until it's time to leave! We imagine a classroom where everybody plays, sings and participates. Music brings us together in a fun way!

Two years is more than enough time to understand that these kids are absolutely wonderful. They are excited to learn, eager to make music and ready for the challenges I throw their way. I am a second-year teacher and am totally impressed with our school community. We have a school size of almost 500 students and a large number of English language learners. Our teachers and parents are committed to student success in ALL areas of their education.
Music functions as a great tool for teaching and supplementing vocabulary, reading, math and numerous other subject areas. The parents at our school attend, appreciate and participate in music events like the school talent show at the end of the year. For this reason, I and other teachers are working hard to acquire activities and materials that will help provide the best musical experience for our students and their families. For a student body that loves music and singing, it's the LEAST we can do!
My Project
Boomwhackers are recently invented instruments that have become a MUST HAVE in the elementary music classroom. Invented in 1994, these fun, colored tubes have made music-making an absolute blast for young students. Who can resist the idea of making music and whacking tubes on the floor at the same time?! This giant multiple-octave diatonic set is the perfect for our students. Each student will be able to have their own boomwhacker, which plays a specific pitch of the music scale. We can reinforce scale degrees, sight-singing, rhythmic accuracy and other skills with these tubes! A little organized whacking and you have yourselves a song! This set includes the most commonly used pitches and will blend with our other pitched and unpitched percussion instruments.
The best aspect of boomwhackers is the idea that everyone is involved in the music-making process.
Each student has their own instrument and is an important member of the ensemble. They are a highly accessible instrument, easy to play and understand, which allows the music teacher to differentiate instruction while including every student in the process. Not to mention how FUN it will be to whack surfaces (gently) to create awesome music. We are eager to try these boomwhackers at BJF!
