I have the best job on the planet! I get to teach students to communicate! Every year, I teach more than 60 students. My students all have some type of speech and/or language impairment. We start every therapy session sharing a good thing that has happened in our lives. My students are eager to work on their speech and language goals.
My students love using books in speech and language therapy.
I want to foster a love for reading while remediating speech and language deficits! I use books in therapy sessions to address their speech and language impairments, but also improve their literacy skills while targeting standards from the Mississippi College and Career Readiness Standards.
My Project
I have a wide range of students with varying speech and language deficits. I can target speech error sounds, sentence structure, fluency, and reading comprehension all in one therapy session with the use of books. The books that I am requesting will also target teaching language concepts such as: similes, metaphors, idioms, pronouns, prepositions, antonyms, synonyms, and homonyms. I am also requesting bookshelves in order to display these books in my classroom. The book shelf and rack will give me a place to store the books. I will use the books daily in my speech therapy sessions.
My students love to listen to a book being read out loud to them.
My students will answer questions and retell the story with proper sequencing with correct speech sounds. The use of books will not only increase their speech and language skills, but also increase their literacy skills! Funding this project will help my students with their speech and language skills as well as their literacy skills. This project will allow the students to have a wider variety of books to choose from for our therapy lessons. It will expose them to books they may never have heard of. The project will help over 60 students this year! My students' speech and language deficits are negatively impacting their ability to communicate effectively in the classroom and socialize with peers.
