My students need books that reflect the experiences they have gone through. These books will help students see themselves on the pages of these books and will allow them to connect in a meaningful way.
Here at Crestview we have 150 English language learners representing a variety of countries and cultures from around the world.
We have 18 different languages spoken in our school and 21 different countries represented in K-5th grade.
Students in my classroom are at a variety of language proficiency levels.
We are a Title I building, which means many of our students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Students here at Crestview have a unique perspective and outlook on life. The beautiful thing about our school community is that we are exposed to and get to interact with families from a variety of countries and cultural backgrounds. The classroom becomes an extension of the families and traditional experiences they bring with them.
My students receive one on one language services through our ESL program. Although this may be challenging for most, they always have a smile on their face and are eager to continue learning. We celebrate our diversity and the unique and rich culture this bring to our learning community.
We all have a story to tell. My ELL students struggle to connect to books in our classroom library because they often times are not represented in the titles on the shelves. This project will help build our multicultural section of our library. Every child that walks into my classroom should be able to find a story that reflects who they are and the journey they are on.
Great books tell stories that readers can connect with in a personal way.
These diverse books will help us not just read great texts but connect with them in ways that will change us as readers.
