Help me give my students the books that they have been asking for along with other high quality, rich text that they can apply to their every day living to help them be examples to others.
Welcome to second grade! My students are unique, amazing and diverse in every way. Our school, which is a Title I and magnet school with a focus on the fine and performing arts, offers free breakfast and lunch to all of our students. Despite challenges, my students come in with a positive mindset and an "I can" attitude every day, as they feel safe, loved, and part of a family at school.
Every day my students and I learn more about problem solving, communicating and working together through the use of books, manipulatives and other hands on materials.
There are endless and open-minded opportunities as together we encourage each other to try and try again. Our school offers a unique educational environment with a school focus on the fine and performing arts, however over 85% of our students are still faced with the obstacles of life-poverty, low income and limited resources. Despite these obstacles and others, we form a classroom family and community to support and encourage each other to do our personal best each day and strive for excellence in all that we say.
My Project
This year I have a class of readers! My students can always be found with a book in there in hands no matter what subject we are exploring. Many have developed a love for certain authors, series and genres. Did I mention that they are only second graders? This is totally awesome and they are reading me out of books! We have a running list of books and authors that has been created by them and I would love to see some of their wishes come true.
Students beg to come back to the room for recess daily to read!
This is an awesome celebration to have. I must say that they do read. They partner read, support each other, and respect each others reading abilty. They get so excited when new books arrive or when we get to place an order. The connections that they make with the stories are amazing too.
With so many readers, it is important to keep the books fresh, exciting and in a rotation so everyone can read them. Since we have a range of readers in our class, some have taken it upon themselves to pair up with others who may need support to read a book that they may not be exactly ready for yet, and provide them the encouragement needed, and a friend. Books never go out of style or get old, just loved.
