Help me give my students materials that allow them to play with materials that show who they are with diverse puppets, dramatic play, and materials for creating a cozy and flexible classroom.
My students walk into school each day full of life and excited to learn! With many of my students coming from low-income/high-poverty homes, the staff at our school makes every effort to develop our student's social-emotional and academic needs. Our school focuses on "Bee Behaviors" which teach our students to "be kind," "be ready," "be helpful," "be safe," and "be persistent." Our energetic 2nd grade class has 40% children with special needs and 60% general education students. As a teacher in a Title l school, I am constantly looking for ways to engage and challenge my students in a meaningful way.
Although many of my students are faced with several personal and academic challenges, they long for creative and meaningful experiences.
My students like to move, participate in hands-on projects and take field trips around our amazing city! The staff at our school makes it our mission to expose our students to as many different experiences as possible. By creating memorable experiences for my students, I am hopeful to inspire our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic and social-emotional excellence.
My Project
As a beautifully diverse Title One school in Harlem, New York City, our community faces many challenges. Minimal funding for materials that allow for imagination and a cozy classroom, the expansion of non-public schools in the area and personal struggles are just some challenges we face. Children need to feel safe and included in order to learn, and it is our goal to see that it happens.
It is our mission to reach every child and promote their inner beauty and individuality through hands on play, imagination, and a flexible (and cozy) classroom space.
We believe that every child should feel "at home" and safe in their school community. We are requesting puppets, community worker costumes, dramatic play materials, sensory materials and flexible seating on a new clean carpet that promote diversity and inclusion in the classroom. Our students are encouraged to express their personal and diverse backgrounds, family makeups and emotional needs. The materials we've requested were specifically chosen to help promote creativity and allows children to express their individuality.
