We Absolutely Need to Read this Absolutely True Diary!
My students need a class set (65) of "The Absolutely True Diary Of A Parttime Indian" so that we can understand "The West" in the past and in the present.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you really "got" another culture or could truly empathize with someone else's experience? As we venture into learning about "The West" this spring, my students will need an accessible way to understand the Native American experience in the past and in the present.
My students are truly the bee's knees.
They're great readers and writers, and they have very big dreams. They're the 8th graders at a K-8 charter school, and they are becoming great role models for the rest of our student body. Every day, we're getting more and more ready for high school and college with our reading and writing.
My Project
If we can get a class set of Sherman Alexie's Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, my students will be able to make connections between the past and the present. They'll have true insight into at least one version of the Native American experience in the present as we learn about the Westward Expansion of the past. Reading this book will open their eyes to another kind of writing and to a very exciting author.
There's nothing quite like reading a powerful novel as a class.
Like our other class novel that we read this year, this book has the potential to not only unify students this year but to show my future students an exciting aspect of what they will read when they come to my class. This book will stay with my students, and my school, for years to come.
