Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom has exceptional readers. Although only in first grade, many of my students are reading at a third or fourth grade level! I want to begin introducing them to books that will capture their imaginations and stimulate a lifelong love of reading!
My students are AMAZING!
They are fun, sweet and SMART! Our school is a Title I school, and at my particular school we are at 98% free or reduced lunch. This basically means that most of the students who attend this school are considered economically disadvantaged. Unfortunately this often means that the students come from homes that do not provide them with a literacy-rich environment. So to have so many of my students performing not just one grade level, but two or three grade levels above where they need to be, means they are fighting the odds and well, by my definition AMAZING.
My Project
As part of a balanced literacy model, a shared read aloud book, allows students to follow along as the teacher models what it will be like for students as they reach this level of reading. At a first grade level, students will be able to see the words, including "tricky" words that we will stop to wonder about the possible meanings of and discuss strategies about how to solve those "tricky" words when an adult isn't around to help. They will also be able to build confidence as they see and mouth the words as we read. As I mentioned, my students are reading at an advanced level, so we will also be discussing how to hold on to meaning, and comprehend our stories as they become more complex.
I would like to keep my students' forward momentum in reading going!
I want to make sure that my students have the tools they need to continue to learn more about what it means to be a "good reader", to feel confident about reading and to LOVE what they read! Roald Dahl is an amazing author, who sparked my love of reading from an early age, and I hope to share that experience with my students!
