Wave Interactions/Ripple Tanks

My Students

My students are eager to engage in hands-on experimentation in the classroom after having to experiment virtually or on a very limited basis due to social distancing protocols due to COVID. They love to ask questions about the world around them and then plan and conduct experiments that help them to answer those questions. They especially love experiments where they can see the results of their experimentation in real-time.

My Project

The Ripple Tanks will allow students to develop and use models to describe the structure of waves and allow them to experience first hand how waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through the water in the tank. They can make changes to the frequency of the waves and look for patterns in wave amplitude and wave energy.

The students will be able to replace virtual labs with real time, hands-on experimentation where they are able to manipulate variables and answer questions about wave interactions.

The students will use prisms and other materials provided with the ripple tanks to experience refraction, interference, and reflection at their lab stations.
