My students come from a wide range of backgrounds: different ethnicities, learning abilities, and learning needs. In spite of their backgrounds, all students deserve the opportunity to learn and all students can learn. I believe in having high expectations for my students and my job, as their teacher, is to help them reach those expectations. To do that, I believe in engaging them in rigorous, hands-on activities for authentic experiences in science.
My students are in dire need of tools to help them transition to the new Next Generation Science Standards.
To properly implement these standards, students need to act as scientists, rather than merely learn about them. This project will allow that to happen.
My Project
Similar to waves in the ocean, light and sound travel by means of waves. This is obviously a bit abstract and, coupled with the fact that most of my students have had little exposure with this physics concept, this idea can be challenging to teach effectively. A bell jar, ringer, and vacuum with enable my students to experience how sound needs a medium through which to travels. The coils and string will allow students to see waves' properties, experiment with how waves travel, and the relationship between a wave's amplitude and energy.
To truly understand a concept, students need to discover by themselves how that concept works.
These materials allow my students to do that. By purchasing these materials, my students will have an opportunity to learn about the behaviors of waves and take control of their learning in the process.
