Ms. Orilio from Parkland FL is requesting Lab Equipment through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

My Students

My Advanced Placement Environmental Science (APES) students are bright, inquisitive individuals who are looking for hands-on ways to examine concepts in their environmental science class. My students are great kids, who love doing experiments and analyzing data. They take AP Environmental Science as an elective, to learn more about a scientific field that interests them and to earn college credit. While doing so, they also become better citizens.

Hands-on, inquiry based learning allows my students to answer questions they have regarding scientific phenomena.

These lab supplies will allow my students to create their own experiments and further their scientific curiosity. Kill-A-Watt meters, in particular, will allow students to understand more about electricity generation, calculate math problems, and take this knowledge home to be better citizens and good decision-makers with their own energy use and money in the future.

My Project

Students will use Kill-A-Watt electricity meters to measure the wattage of several appliances brought into the lab: lamp, toaster, cell phone charger, microwave, computer, etc. Students will also calculate how many watts an appliance will use over many hours and practice metric conversion by calculating kilowatts. In addition, they will use this information, plus the local cost of electricity, to calculate how much they would pay in electricity costs.

This knowledge is not only an essential part of the course, but will also provide a lifelong skill that will allow them to be better informed citizens in the future.

They can share this knowledge with their family and friends, and hopefully make a difference when it comes to turning off and unplugging items that are not in use!
