I am the art teacher at a public PreK-5 elementary school in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which is located across the street from the housing projects where most of the students live. I have a two-fold mission to empower my students to create magic in their lives through art and to use art for academic support. I would like to be able to plan a unit on watercolors this year. Watercolor painting is a step-by-step process that teaches children about sequencing, a skill that many of my students struggle with. When children work with watercolors, it becomes very clear to them what needs to be done first, second, and so on, in order to be able to paint and to keep their colors from muddying. As students master this skill, their colors become more and more brilliant and they create wonderful images. I would like to see all my students, from PreK through Fifth Grade, benefit from having watercolor supplies in the Art Studio. The Art Studio needs watercolor paper and replacement paint strips for our watercolor sets. Approximately 380 students would benefit from these supplies. A watercolor painting experience not only gives students a sense of accomplishment as they master the technique, but it teaches them about sequencing, a skill that they need in order to make sense of other disciplines. By helping us procure these supplies, you would be supporting all our students academically as well as helping them to create magic in their lives.
