My students are in a moderate/severe autism spectrum classroom and we want to work on expanding our elective program. We spend a lot of time working on life skills, money, community based instruction, and accessing the community for jobs and social interactions. My students enjoy sensory stimulation in the form of swings, fidgets, music, art, and visuals. My goal for each student is to leave high school with the ability to access the community safely and work where they find purpose. My students range from 9th-12th grade and have many talents and gifts.
We are a Title I school with students who are wonderful and really try their best.
I have a lot of support from my general education co-educators and we integrate our students together. My students require sensory input throughout the day and they all enjoy arts and working outside. My students ride the bus for at least forty minutes to come to school without complaint. They enjoy going out into the community and working at jobs like Round Table and CVS.
My Project
This year we have started an elective wheel in the special education classes. I took on a scrapbooking, card making, art class and have asked the students to come up with additional art ideas that they want to work on or try. They decided they wanted to learn how to paint in addition to scrapbooking and card making.
We need Crayola watercolors and Blick canvas panels to expand our art class and meet the request of the students.
We decided as a class that we wanted larger canvas and watercolor paints to go with our watercolor artist pads. We will use the supplies all year to work on paintings and develop skills in color blending, creativity, and line art.
