My students need quality watercolors pans; a great way to express what they see in their world. Our beautiful farm, adjacent to the campus, waits to be recorded in paint.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'd like students to be observing and recording their world through watercolor. This medium has long been a tool of visual exploration and record keeping for artists, a way to try out compositions in the field. Being able to do this would set students up for success, in whatever field they choose.
Our students are eager to get a world class education.
Most of them are from immigrant families, 75% of them get assistance with free or reduced lunch, and they know that education is a ticket to helping themselves and their hardworking parents. Despite the challenges that these high poverty, urban high school students face, they are interested in art and in using it to talk about their world and their experience.
My Project
With quality watercolors pans, our students will be able to record their world. We will begin by exploring basic color theory and the color wheel. Then we'll go out on our campus, sketching, then painting the landscape around us. Though we are in a low income urban area, we have a working farm adjacent to our campus where students learn to grow and cook healthy food. With watercolors in hand, students can make a visual representation of the farm and its products, getting experience in illustration that may form the basis of a career.
Being able to offer watercolors to students will change their classroom experience completely.
Watercolor is such a friendly medium, easy to work with, easy to clean up. It's the perfect entrance into the world of painted color. With this medium, students will get a taste of potential future careers, especially illustration, in the visual arts. These days such careers are possible from any location. The fact that they live in our neighborhood need not stop them from being successful!
